About NDMC Water Services

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is the civic authority that manages essential services in the central part of New Delhi—home to government buildings, VIP residences, diplomatic missions, and major institutions.

One of NDMC’s key responsibilities is ensuring reliable and clean water supply, which includes a dedicated water tanker service for residents and organizations in need of water during shortages, events, or emergencies.

NDMC Quick Facts:

  • Jurisdiction: Covers central New Delhi (approx. 42.7 sq. km)
  • Responsibility: Maintains water supply infrastructure and provides water tanker services
  • Target Users: Households, commercial units, public institutions, and slum areas within NDMC limits

NDMC’s water tanker sevices help bridge the gap when piped supply is insufficient—especially during peak summer months or water supply disruptions.

This is where NDMC’s water tankers become essential:

Importance of Water Management in Urban Settings

In cities like New Delhi, water tanker supply plays a vital role in urban water management. Even with a piped water network, challenges like high demand, pipeline damage, low pressure, or construction needs can lead to temporary water shortages.

NDMC Water Tanker Services

There are several scenarios where water tankers become a necessity:

Common Reasons Residents & Institutions Need Water Tankers:

  • 🛠️ Pipeline Breakdown: During maintenance or leakage repairs
  • ☀️ Summer Scarcity: When demand spikes and water pressure drops
  • 🏗️ Construction Work: Sites without a direct water connection
  • 🏘️ Slum/JJ Clusters: Areas with limited or no piped water access
  • 🎪 Public Events: Fairs, rallies, exhibitions, and weddings requiring additional water
  • 🏢 High-Rise Buildings: Facing low water pressure on upper floors

Water tankers provide a flexible, mobile solution that ensures residents and organizations do not face disruptions during critical times.

Types of Tankers & Trolleys

NDMC operates a dedicated fleet of clean, eco-friendly CNG-powered tankers and trolleys to supply water across its jurisdiction.

These vehicles vary in capacity and are used depending on the need, road accessibility, and volume required.

9KL Tanker

  • Capacity: 9,000 Litres (9 kilolitres)
  • Best For:
    • Large apartment complexes
    • Government offices
    • Events with large water requirements
  • Usage: Delivered via online booking or emergency allocation

This is the most commonly booked tanker due to its high capacity and efficiency for bulk deliveries.

4.5 KL Trolley

  • Capacity: 4,500 Litres
  • Best For
    • Narrow lanes or congested areas
    • Smaller households or slums
    • Low-consumption needs or top-up supply
  • Advantage: Easier maneuverability in compact areas where larger tankers cannot enter

NDMC deploys these trolleys especially in inner colonies, old city zones, or event venues where road access is limited.

🕐 Refund processing time: Typically 7–10 working days, depending on the case.

Summer Water Supply Management

Every year, Delhi experiences extreme water demand during summer months due to rising temperatures, increased consumption, and reduced ground water levels. To tackle this, NDMC rolls out a dedicated Summer Action Plan to ensure equitable water access—especially via tankers in areas facing short supply.

NDMC has introduced a comprehensive Summer Water Management Strategy to enhance tanker services, infrastructure, and emergency responsiveness for the summer of 2025.

Acquisition of New CNG Water Trolleys

To increase fleet strength and improve delivery efficiency, NDMC has:

  • Procured new eco-friendly CNG water tankers and trolleys
  • Focused on lightweight, maneuverable 4.5 KL trolleys ideal for narrow roads
  • Upgraded old tankers with GPS tracking to monitor route and delivery in real-time

Goal: Reduce wait time for water delivery and improve service to congested or high-demand areas.

Focus Areas: Slums & JJ Clusters

NDMC prioritizes slum settlements and JJ (Jhuggi-Jhopdi) clusters, where piped supply is either unreliable or nonexistent.

Actions taken:

  • Increased frequency of tanker rounds in water-scarce localities
  • Dedicated rosters for high-demand areas like Sanjay Camp, Kali Bari Marg, and Bharti Nagar
  • Coordination with local residents for timed distribution and queue control

NDMC ensures free-of-cost water delivery in these vulnerable zones to uphold basic human needs during peak heat.

Pilot Project: 24x7 Water Supply in Vinay Marg

As part of long-term planning, NDMC has initiated a pilot project for 24x7 piped water supply in select model zones—reducing reliance on tankers over time.

  • Pilot Area: Vinay Marg
  • Coverage: 156 households and government flats
  • Status: Successfully launched; under observation
  • Future Scope: Learnings to be expanded to Chanakyapuri, Lodhi Estate, etc.

While this project is focused on piped water, it eases pressure on tanker fleets and sets a benchmark for smarter urban water supply in NDMC areas.

‘Har Ghar Jal’ Urban Implementation (9,386 Connections)

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission - Urban, NDMC is aligning its tanker services and infrastructure upgrades to the national goal of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ (Water for Every Home).

Progress in NDMC Areas:

  • Total connections achieved: 9,386 piped water connections
  • Households targeted: 100% coverage
  • Tanker dependency: significantly reduced in newly connected zones
  • NDMC continues tanker support where piped work is ongoing or under transition

The initiative ensures that water tankers act as a bridge, ensuring zero disruption while permanent pipelines are being laid.
